DUNFERMLINE FOLK WEEKEND 2008 ( October 24th - 26th )
Following the great success of the Folk Weekend in 2007, the Dunfermline
Folk Weekend 2008 will take place from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th October
2008. The Weekend has been organised by The Dunfermline Folk Club and
will feature a mixture of professional and local artists.
Three days of concerts, ceilidhs, sessions and workshops will begin on
Friday with a Ceilidh in the Baldridgeburn Centre featuring the ever
popular Dollarfield Ceilidh band. The Saturday evening concert will
feature the internationally acclaimed Battlefield Band. On Saturday
afternoon Jack Pryde will present a slide show of old Dunfermline with
accompanying songs in the Baldridgeburn Centre, and this will be followed
in the West End Bowling Club by a concert of Fife songs featuring Andy
Chung, Andy Shanks, Gifford Lind and Peter Cameron on fiddle. The Sunday
evening concert in the Thistle Tavern will feature performances by Andy
Chung, Gill Bowman, Andy Shanks, Ian Davison and Scott Gardiner plus the
usual Folk Club regulars.
On Saturday there will be hourly family shows starting at 11.00am by Fife
based duo Crooked Jack in the Kingsgate Centre.
On Saturday and Sunday there will be lots of opportunities for musicians
and singers to participate in performing at sessions, and instrumental and
voice workshops for those wishing to learn something and develop their
skills. A number of highly experienced and talented workshop leaders will
convene the workshops in the Baldridgeburn Centre, including a ‘Develop
your fiddle playing’ workshop with Nicola Auchnie, current Oban Masters
Fiddle Champion from Turriff; ‘Improving your Songwriting’ with Ian
Davison from Glasgow; ‘Singing Scots Songs’ with the vastly experienced
RSAMD tutor Gordeana McCulloch; and a Singers Gathering to sing Scottish
Songs led by the highly talented and energenic Amy Lord from Dunkeld. A
selection of local musicians will be on hand on Saturday morning to work
with anyone that wants to try a new instrument – guitar, fiddle, mouth
organ, Jews Harp, etc etc. There will be free sessions on Saturday and
Sunday in the club room at the Thistle Tavern.
Throughout the weekend the Art Club will be exhibiting a wide variety of
work, including a special display of paintings of Dunfermline and the
area.'
