Dunfermline Carnegie Library celebrated its anniversary at a reception on Friday 29th August, 125 years to the day since it first opened its doors to the people of Dunfermline in 1883. The library was the very first of 2,509 Carnegie-funded libraries opened in the English speaking world.
In his speech to library users and invited guests, Councillor Rosiejak recalled the history and development of the library, as well as looking forward, remarking that 'in combination with the new Museum and Gallery which is about to be constructed, the library will become part of a major cultural and heritage centre which is going to serve the people of Dunfermline for years to come.'
A programme of events has been arranged over the next two months, including an author visit, a family history talk, computer taster sessions and Bookstart Bounce & Tickle sessions for children.
Displays in the library include anniversary greetings from Carnegie Libraries around the world and a mosaic produced by the pupils of Commercial Primary School.
