It’s Robert the Bruce’s 750th birthday – and the whole of Scotland is invited to the party
Step into the medieval era as we celebrate King Robert the Bruce’s 750th birthday in a grand, free festival exclusively for the people of Scotland.
The Bruce 750 festival takes place over two days in Scotland’s ancient capital, Dunfermline, on 01 and 02 June. The venue is Pittencrieff Park, right next to Bruce’s final resting place, Dunfermline Abbey, and its historic palace ruins.
The Monarch has summoned his knights, nobles, warriors, artisans and entertainers to put on the kind of show not seen in Scotland for many a year.
Visitors will see jousters charging each other on horseback, the King’s falcons hovering above, and archers practising their deadly skills. They will even get the chance to (safely) replay the Battle of Bannockburn. Between the arena events, families can visit the artisan craft fair and the many food and drink facilities.
Bring the whole family for a day of fun and learning. Kids can enjoy storytelling, learn medieval skills, get their faces painted, and bounce around in the castle and funfair. Don't forget to dress up in medieval costumes for a chance to win a prize!
Immerse yourself in the medieval world as minstrels, sword-makers, woodworkers, and monks engage in lively conversations with the public. And of course, King Robert himself, accompanied by his trusted senior noblemen and knights, will be present.
Sandy Sewell, of organisers Visit Dunfermline, said: "The Bruce Festival was a popular annual event here years ago. Now, thanks to support from Fife Council, the Carnegie Trust, The National Lottery and Fife Events, we're bringing it back bigger and better than ever. As well as enjoying the spectacle, visitors can also experience the fascinating history and beautiful surroundings of Scotland's ancient capital and newest city."
Bruce 750 is open to the public from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday, 01 June, and Sunday, 02 June. Here is a timetable of events.
This is just a reminder that there will also be a vintage bus service to the festival from Leys Park Road. We look forward to seeing you all on the day, and I hope you are as excited as we are!
