Billy here on an auspicious day for our town CITY!

Today we woke up to the fantastic news that the former Royal Burgh of Dunfermline has finally been recognised as a modern City. It has been chosen for this status as part of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in which a record 8 towns were given this new status. Dunfermline now becomes Scotland’s eighth city.

Whilst there might not be an immediate financial benefit it will certainly make it easier to apply for funding and investment to bring in economic benefits that our city so desperately needs. Some sources suggest that Perth’s economy has grown by around 12 per cent since it was chosen in 2012.

The other benefit is that it will hopefully instil a sense of civic pride. I think Dunfermline is a wonderful place to live and spend my leisure time in, but despite this so many seem to have a right downer on their home city.

Whilst the retail centre has certainly been met with severe challenges recently, we are certainly not alone in this respect just now. I really hope that this news can help to shift people’s attitude and we see more community involvement as a result.

We at Visit Dunfermline are all geared up to build on this great news and do all we can within our power to get behind every single initiative that will benefit the city and surrounding communities.

The City of Dunfermline is on the up!

Billy.
